MILWAUKEE -- Emily Jansen hit two home runs to help Marian defeat Lakeland 7-1 in the opening game of the 2012 Northern Athletics Conference Softball tournament, while Concordia Wisconsin shut out Dominican for six innings and held on to a 4-2 victory in the night cap this evening at Alverno Field.
Jensen hit a three-run bomb to center field in the bottom of the second inning to put the fourth -seeded Sabres (21-18) in front, 5-0, and added a lead-off solo shot to right field in the fifth for her fourth RBI of the game.
Cherise Waltz (16-13) went the distance for the Sabres as she struck out five and scattered eight hits over seven innings, while Erin Henk (14-11) picked up the loss in the circle for the fifth-seeded Muskies (19-18).
The Muskies' lone score came off a solo home run by Leah Sheahan in the top of the sixth.
Marian advances to play top-seeded Benedictine at 9 a.m. tomorrow, while Lakeland's opponent will be determined via the 11 a.m. game featuring second-seeded Aurora and third-seeded Concordia Wisconsin.
The Falcons (25-14) scored twice on squeeze plays in their victory over the sixth-seeded Stars (21-20), and Sheri Weidner added a solo home run in the sixth to extend the lead to 4-0.
The Stars had just two hits through the first six innings, but mounted a comeback after they tagged CUW hurler Jamie Schuh (18-10) for a pair of runs in the final inning. Dominican had the tying run at the plate, but Schuh forced a groundout to end the threat and the game.
Schuh fanned five batters and allowed just four hits in the complete-game victory, while the Stars' Emily Mahoney (16-8) allowed eight hits and four runs in the defeat.
The Stars will face the loser of Friday's first game at 3 p.m. Action will continue with a 5 p.m. game featuring the winners of the morning games, and the double-elimination tournament will have the final games played on Saturday.
