FOREST PARK, Ill. -- Sarah Budz (Orland Park, Ill.) led off the bottom of the first of game one of a Northern Athletics Conference doubleheader between Dominican University and the visiting Wisconsin Lutheran College Warriors, giving the Stars a 1-0 advantage. The blast was historic for Budz, the 25th of the senior sluggers' career, surpassing Jamie Kurt for all-time lead in the NAC.
The score remained 1-0 into the bottom of the sixth as Dominican's Jori Cicalesurrendered just two hits and allowed just three base runners through six innings of work. The right-hander baffled the Warriors' lineup all game, striking out seven while walking just one and failing to allow a single run.
Cicale was lifted after six, after the Stars tacked on four runs in the bottom half of the inning, including a two-run home run by freshman Tayler Miller (Elkhart, Ind.). Cicale gave way to Sarah Slouber (Willow Springs, Ill.) who allowed one unearned run in her one inning of work as the Stars picked up the 5-1 victory.
Budz, Miller and Corinne Wimmer (Elgin, Ill.) had one hit apiece as the Stars managed just three hits but displayed patience at the plate, drawing six walks and taking advantage of a pair of errors by the Warriors.
In game two, it was freshman Allie Evans (Greenwood, Ind.) that jump started the Stars' offense in the first, roping a two-out single up the middle to plate Budz and Wimmer and stake the Stars to a 2-0 lead.
Budz and Wimmer logged back-to-back RBIs in the fourth as the Stars took a 4-0 lead into the seventh. The Warriors finally got to the Stars' Emily Mahoney (Crystal Lake, Ill.) in the final frame, as Jinny Curtis hit a sacrifice fly to score pinch-runner Andria Wolske.
The sac fly was the lone tally allowed by Mahoney, who picked up the complete-game victory, scattering two hits and two walks while striking out eight over seven innings.
The Stars now stand at 17-17 on the season and 10-8 in conference play. Dominican will travel up north to Milwaukee to take on the MSOE Raiders in a conference twin bill on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00p.m.
