Edgewood Earns Weekly Awards Sweep In Softball

Edgewood's Jessica Spitzer and Charlie Leikness were named the Northern Athletics Conference Position Player and Pitching Softball Student-Athletes of the Week for games of February 20-26.

Spitzer (Burlington, Wis.) led the Eagles to a 3-1 opening weekend at the Finlandia Dome Tournament. She hit .429 on 6-for-14 batting with two walks.

The junior shortstop hit three home runs, including two in the Eagles' 9-7 win over Simpson (Iowa), and another in the 6-4 win over Mount Mary. Spitzer also drove in a team-high seven runs.

Leikness (Oregon, Wis.) began the season with an extra-inning complete game win over Finlandia on Friday. The sophomore pitcher matched a career-high with six strikeouts in the 8-7, nine-inning victory.

Leikness followed that with another complete game win over Simpson on Saturday. She earned her final win of the weekend in four innings of relief against Mount Mary.
