Lakeland College soccer coach selected for Division I role

SHEBOYGAN, Wis. -- David Madsen, Lakeland College's head men's and women's soccer coach for the past four seasons, has been named assistant women's soccer coach at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
The Lakeland men's program was 23-43-4 during Madsen's four seasons, 18-20-3 in the Northern Athletics Conference. In 2008, the men's team posted its first winning overall record since 1994, including an undefeated 4-0-2 mark at home. The women's program was 31-44-1 during his tenure, 21-25-1 in the NAC.
This past March, Madsen led both teams on a 10-day European Soccer Tour in the United Kingdom during Lakeland's spring break. The trip included games against local soccer teams and several off-field learning opportunities in and around London and Chester.
"It's difficult to leave Lakeland, but this is a good opportunity for me to keep developing as a coach," Madsen said. "Lakeland has been a great experience for me. I've learned a lot about coaching and managing players. It's about competing and doing well, and I'm very proud of the players we had and what they were able to achieve.
"I was happy to see the men's team enjoy a steady incline, and while the women's program was up and down, overall all our players worked on developing the right mentality. That's important for any program."
Madsen came to Lakeland from UW-Whitewater where he was a standout goalkeeper and four-year starter who helped UWW to three NCAA tournament appearances. After graduating in 2003, he served as assistant coach for the men's and women's soccer programs for three seasons.
This summer, Madsen was assistant coach with the Chicago Red Eleven, an amateur affiliate of the Chicago Red Stars of Women's Professional Soccer (WPS).
Lakeland athletic director Jane Bouche said the college will move quickly to hire a new head soccer coach.
"We thank Dave for his work, and wish him well in his new role," Bouche said. "It's a great opportunity for the next step in his coaching career."
