LISLE, Ill. -- The Benedictine University football team learned its destination for the NCAA Division III Playoffs on Sunday night during an campus gathering at the CoalBen to watch the NCAA selection show.
The Eagles will head East to Alliance, Ohio for a meeting with the University of Mount Union, who has reached the national championship game the last six seasons and has missed out on the trip to Salem, Virginia just twice since 1996. Mount Union has won 10 national titles and owns the most playoff wins in NCAA history. The Purple Raiders are ranked second in the D3football.com poll and are a perfect 10-0 after winning the Ohio Athletics Conference.
Benedictine reached the playoffs last season and were sent to St. Thomas, holding a 3-0 lead after an 11-play drive to open the game before eventually falling 57-10.
Benedictine (7-3, 6-1) shared the Northern Athletics Conference Championship with Concordia Chicago but earned the automatic bid by virtue of a 43-21 victory at Concordia Chicago in the conference opener. The Eagles closed the regular season with a 23-21 loss at home to Wisconsin Lutheran on Saturday, the first conference loss since 2009, snapping a string of 16 consecutive conference wins. Benedictine is the first school to represent the Northern Athletics Conference in the playoffs in consecutive seasons. Running back John Borsellino has already established single season school records for touchdowns, carries, and rushing yards.
