Edgewood's Duellman, Dokey
earn ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American honors
MADISON, Wis. -- The combination of Dokey and
Duellman has created headaches for Edgewood College’s men’s soccer
opponents for four years. However, they probably didn’t realize how
well that same combination used their heads so well away from the
pitch. Today, Tyler Duellman and Jerrid Dokey were both named ESPN
The Magazine Academic All-Americans, marking the first time in
school history two teammates have earned Academic All-American
honors in the same year.
Duellman, a senior from South Milwaukee, Wis., earned First Team
honors in the College Division, becoming just the third First Team
Academic All-American in school history. Women’s basketball player
Megan Scheele earned the honor in 2008-09 and baseball standout
Andrew Handorf achieved the same recognition after the 2006 season.
Duellman, a defender, owns a 3.93 grade point average in
biochemistry. He recorded career-highs in goals (3), assists (5) and
points (11) during his senior year. Duellman tallied many of those
assists with his pinpoint accuracy on free kicks. He scored a
memorable goal against Wisconsin Lutheran College, tallying a header
with four seconds remaining during a wild scramble in front of the
net, to give the Eagles a 3-2 victory over the Warriors.
Dokey received Second Team Academic All-American status. Dokey has
twice been a First Team Academic All-District 5 selection, but this
is his first Academic All-American honor. Along with Duellman, he
becomes the sixth different Eagle to earn Academic All-American. The
only other men’s soccer player previously was Dan Butz who was a
Third Team selection in 2004.
The senior from Green Bay, Wis. has a 3.76 grade point average in
biochemistry. Dokey, one of the most dynamic players in Edgewood
College history, shared the team lead this season with 27 points, on
10 goals and seven assists. Dokey finished his Edgewood College
career seventh all-time in both goals (30) and points (72). He is
one of just 12 Eagles in history to score 10 goals or more in a
single season.
The ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American teams are nominated and
voted on by the members of the College Sports Information Directors
of America (CoSIDA). The members of the eight Academic All-District
teams are eligible for Academic All-American voting. The College
Division is comprised of all the NCAA Division II, NCAA Division
III, NAIA, Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) and Junior Colleges
in North America. Dokey and Duellman were the only Academic
All-American selections from the Northern Athletics Conference this
season.
