Northern Athletics Conference announces men's soccer All-NAC teams and individual awards
WAUKESHA, Wis. -- The Northern Athletics Conference has announced the awards for the 2009 men's soccer season, as voted on by the conference's head coaches. Included are 14-member First and Second All-NAC Teams, honorable mention selections, a 14-member All-Freshman Team, a 12-member All-Sportsmanship Team and the four individual awards of Defensive Player, Offensive Player, Freshman and Coach of the Year.

NAC regular season and tournament champion Dominican University received two of the four individual honors as Juan Carlos Saldaņa was named Offensive Player of the Year and Ryan Roberts was named Freshman of the Year.

MSOE, runner-up in the regular season and NAC tournament, received the other two individual awards as Joe Westrich was named Defensive Player of the Year while his coach Jimmy Banks was named conference Coach of the Year.

Saldaņa, a senior midfielder from Foristell, Mo., (Chaminade Prep), led the Stars to another undefeated conference season (11-0 NAC, 15-1-3 overall) and their fourth-consecutive conference title. He led the conference in shots with 3.58 per game average and tallied 22 points on eight goals and six assists in 19 games this season.

Robert s, who started in 16 games as a rookie, had six goals and four assists for the Stars this season. The forward from Elmhurst, Ill., (York H.S.) also had two game winners for Dominican who opens the first round of the NCAA III Men's Soccer Championship hosting Elmhurst College this Saturday, Nov. 14.

Westrich (Racine, Wis./St. Catherine's) guided the Raider defense that limited opponents to 1.14 goals per game and had six shutouts this season. The junior defender also scored six goals and started in all 21 games for the Raiders (13-6-2, 9-1-1 NAC).

Banks received his first Coach of the Year award in the NAC, and first since 2003 in the former Lake Michigan Conference. His Raiders exceed expectations this season finishing second in the NAC standings, after being picked fifth in the preseason poll.
